Chamber News - Business Impact featuring Congressman George Holding

Congressman George Holding spoke at the Business Impact Luncheon held on Monday, May 8th held at South River EMC Meeting Room. VP of Economic Development Rodney Stewart welcomed everyone. Thanking Congressman Holding for coming to Dunn to discuss the future of the United States, NC and Harnett Co.

Congressman Holding, who has a tax and tobacco background, spoke about the Tax Code legislation being reviewed. He noted current taxation policies make the US very non-competitive in the world market, the code is too complicated and is one of the highest tax rates for business. He noted the Ways and Means committee, of which he leads, is responsible for the origination of all tax policies. He also stated the only way to fix our current debt problem is through tax reform. By lowering the corporate rate with reform it is believed it would boost economic development and foster growth.

He mentioned the US is considering a Border Adjustment Tax (BAT). This is a tax would be paid by foreign companies bringing products into the US. American products made with foreign imports would be subject to this BAT, increasing production rates (due to foreign companies lowering costs of materials to offset tax), strengthening the dollar and increasing the cost of living.

At the conclusion, the Congressman fielded a few questions about the healthcare act, briefly reviewing the current revisions being made. One question asked was directed toward government spending, to which Congressman Holding responded the non-discretionary spending constitutes 2/3 of the overall debt and the current spending rates need to be curtailed to help reduce it.

Congressman Holding invited any constituent to contact his office. He has a great staff in both Raleigh and D.C., available to assist District 2 with personal interactions with the VA, IRS, State Department and Social Security, and more. Also, he is happy to host children (12 and younger) on the House floor during votes to help foster the democratic process with the youth of today and leaders of the future. Contact his Raleigh office by phone at 919-782-4400, or his D.C. office by phone at 202-225-3032. For more information about Congressman George Holding, visit holding.house.gov.

Chamber News - Washington D.C. Perspective

A delegation representing the Dunn Chamber attended the North Carolina Business & Economic Development Summit hosted by the entire North Carolina Congressional delegation, headed by Congressman Richard Hudson, in Washington, D.C. on September 8 & 9, 2015.

Tuesday's session began with Governor Pat McCrory welcoming his fellow North Carolinian's; U.S. DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx began the days topic of Transportation. A Transportation Leadership Panel then followed; N.C. DOT Secretary Nick Tennyson recognized Rooms To Go and Godwin Manufacturing in his remarks. Then an official briefing was given by all of the NC Congressional members, during which affordable health care, banking regulations and tax implications and their impact on small business, fracking, the XM Bank and internet Sales Tax were all mentioned as concerns. All were concerned about the long term ramifications of the Iran Agreement.

The overwhelming concern was around growing our economy and job creation. Many spoke about the difficulties in getting loans for entrepreneurs. And that entrepreneur-ism is at an all time low, at less than 30%. Congressman George Holding stated Congress has passed a Small Business Tax Relief Bill—however he was sure it would not pass the Senate due to gridlock. Congressman Mark Meadows remarked that the state needs to work together to create jobs and to lesson the impact that too many regulations has had on businesses and jobs. Congressman David Rouzer reiterated our need to be more business friendly—to grow our economy and to restrain spending in order to lesson our debt situation. Following the days sessions, the delegation had dinner and conversation with Congresswoman Ellmers and some of her staff.

Wednesday, Sept. 9th’s sessions included remarks by Mike Sommers, Chief of Staff to Speaker of the House John Boehner, who commented his office knows that people are frustrated by the lack of accomplishment in the government. US Senator Thom Tillis noted one of his main concerns is in regards to EPA regulations that could restrict economic growth in the state. US Senator Richard Burr remains optimistic about our state and the nations economy. As a global economy some pitfalls remain with the Corporate Tax, regulations, and our energy needs. He does believe that higher education is one of N.C.’s greatest assets. US Representative Paul Ryan spoke about the need to shrink our government overall and to reform the welfare, health care and prison systems.

Chamber News - Dunn Young Professionals Third Annual " Successful Business Leaders" Forum

On April 30 the Third Annual "Successful Business Leaders" Forum presented by Oscar N. Harris & Associates, PA, was held at the Brass Lantern Steak House. More than 40 young (and young at heart) professionals gathered to hear three featured local entrepreneurs speak about their successes during the complimentary dinner.

Chamber Vice President and Young Professionals Chair, Russell A. Galvan moderated the event. The featured speakers included Dallas "Bo" Dafford, Sr. of Dafford Funeral Home; Patsy Powell, of Re/Max Signature Realty; and Freddie Williford of Sherry's Bakery (who graciously filled in for Mayor Oscar Harris).

The overall sentiments of the evening were to be committed to what you do, to value yours and others time, to strive to do your best at everything you do, employees make your business and “always respect everyone, never take advantage of anyone - you do not know their circumstances”, according to Bo Dafford. Patsy Powell stated she got her best piece of advice from Paul Perry, of Perry Brothers Tire and Service. He told her about relationship selling, which Mrs. Powell explained as “Greet every customer by name, learn something about them and make them feel like the most important customer you have.”

Throughout the event there were serious moments and lots of laughter - with many a personal story being told. As all three speakers noted, when you own a "family business" there is no separation of your family and work life. Make sure you are committed to both completely and it will work out. Mr. Freddie Williford said it best when he remarked, “They (work and family) are the same. And I enjoy my work more than anyone!”

Chamber Executive Vice President Tammy Williams remarked, “I love the way our featured guests shared their life and hearts with the young adults. I believe everyone in attendance took a nugget home.”

At the conclusion of the evening, the audience asked questions that the three speakers fielded with ease and expertise, answering such questions as what kinds of risks had they taken in life; how do they draw the line between family and work; how do we get more young people to become entrepreneurs; and what do young people today need to do to be successful?

The Young Professionals thank Mr. Dafford, Mrs. Powell and Mr. Williford for sharing their insights and for being such willing participants in this open discussion with the future of Dunn and the surrounding area.
