Jernigan's Nursery & Trading Post Professional Wom

Beautiful, great and elegant with a few surprises is a great way to describe the Chamber's Professional Women's Luncheon presented this year by lead sponsor, Jernigan's Nursery & Trading Post.

The decorations were beautiful and gave the more than 275 people in attendance a breath of spring as they entered in.  The entertainment provided by Butler, Hughes and Hayes, left everyone wanting to hear even more and the elegant and delicious food catered by B & B Catering & Event Planning was also a big hit.  Most of those in attendance agree that this year's event was one of the best ever.

Patricia Timmons-Goodson, Associate Justice for the North Carolina Supreme Court gave an inspiring and timely speech and Chamber President Barry Kelly surprised everyone with his impersonation of his strange cousin, Julia Kelly.

All attendees received a beautiful lunch tote and several went home with a door prize donated by DACC members.

"It was a great night," says Chairman John Snipes.  "This is a great family night of entertainment.  These concerts bring hundreds of potential shoppers to our downtown, to our city and it's just a lot of fun!"

Children enjoyed the free bubbles, sidewalk chalk and the music too.  Sharon Stephens, Executive Assistant at the Chamber, led the group in line dances during the intermission.

Membership Drive a Success!

The Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual membership drive March 4 – April 2. “This drive was the most successful since Tammy has been here at the Chamber”, according to Vice President of Membership Development Dana Cochran. “With the success of our last membership drives, we really didn’t know if this one could continue that tradition, but these outstanding volunteers surpassed all our expectations. We have officially titled them the ‘dream team’ for DACC.”
This year’s theme was “Wanted, DACC New Members Round UP!” and the team kicked off the successful drive with a fun training session including a western theme. At the membership drive kick-off, committee members dressed in their western attire and threw horse shoes to begin the competition. Volunteers were served ice cream sandwiches and pretzels during the training session.
Committee members divided into two teams, which were led by Ashlyn Thompson and Sylvia Jackson of WPYB Radio. Mrs. Jackson’s team beat the competition and Mrs. Thompson’s team had to serve the winning team at the awards luncheon held at the Pots and Patches Tea Room on Thursday.
Top sales people for the drive were this year’s team captains, Sylvia Jackson and Ashlyn Thompson. Second Place prize went to Annette Barfield from Mrs. Jackson’s team.
The committee collectively signed up 17 new members, bringing the total membership of the chamber to more than 470. The more members the chamber has, the stronger the chamber’s voice for our businesses.

Reach One Mentor Program Kicks Off

The Reach One Mentor Program developed by the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dunn Police Athletic League held the official Kickoff to the program last week.

The Kickoff was held at the PAL Center and allowed mentors to meet with their matches and their families.  After the matching, there was a meet and greet allowing the mentors and the youth to exchange information and to get to know each other a little better.  First Federal Bank sponsored the event by providing pizza for everyone and purchasing the supplies for the teambuilding exercise.  After pizza, the matches and their mentors were paired with another team and they were charged with building the tallest tower using only marshmallows and uncooked spaghetti.

Pat Marshall, Chairman for the Reach One Mentor Program, greeted everyone and then stepped into his role as a mentor.  After the fun and games, everyone was given a quick tour of the facility.

The Program is still recruiting volunteers to serve as mentors.  Mentors are asked to volunteer a minimum of four hours per month preferably seeing the young person weekly.  Volunteers must be at  least 18 years old; adhere to personal background checks; show a genuine interest in children; and exhibit integrity and good character.  This program is designed around youth ages 11-15 years of age.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor for the Reach One Mentor Program, contact the Dunn Chamber office at 910-892-4113 or PAL at 910-892-1873 for additional information or an application.  You can also find an applicaiton and information at www.dunnpal.org.

Role Models Needed for Mentor Program

The Reach One Mentor Program is in need of mentors to begin the 2007-2008 program.

The Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dunn Police Athletic League have partnered to develop and run this new program for our area. The Mentor Program, which is designed around the Big Brother Big Sister national program, has received a lot of assistance from the Triangle BBBS office.

According to Chamber President Pat Marshall, “We will focus on youth ages 11 to 15 years old as this is a critical time in the life of our young people. This is our opportunity to reach them and make a difference in their life. We need people to help them make the right choices by giving them encouragement and by being a positive role model.”

The program is designed mainly for young people in single parent homes but any at-risk child will be considered for the program. PAL will handle the background checks of the volunteers and matching the volunteer to the child.

According to Mr. Rowland of PAL, “we are excited about this new program and what it can mean for some of the young people we work with here at PAL. We feel with this program that more of the community can be involved in helping the youth more in depth by helping them set and attain their personal goals.”

The main challenge right now for the program is recruiting volunteers to serve as mentors. Mentors are asked to volunteer a minimum of four hours per month preferably seeing the young person weekly. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old: adhere to personal background checks; show a genuine interest in children; and exhibit integrity and good character.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor for the Reach One Mentor Program, contact the Dunn Chamber office at 910-892-4113 or PAL at 910-892-1873 for additional information or an application. You can also find an application and information at www.dunnpal.org. Applications will be accepted until October 12 with the orientation set for October 16 at 4:00 p.m.

Now combine that with the dynamic lead vocals of Joey Bishop and you have one exciting and entertaining show full of great music.

Chamber and PAL Partner for Mentor Program

The Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dunn Police Athletic League have partnered to bring a new program to the City of Dunn.
The Chamber and PAL will work together to recruit volunteers and manage a Mentor program called Reach One Mentor Program. Chamber President Pat Marshall had a vision for seeing a Big Brother Big Sister program in Dunn. After further investigation, he found out it would be a while before that organization could begin here.
The Chamber enlisted the help of Rodney Rowland, Director for PAL, and together they formed the Reach One Mentor Program.
The program is designed around the Big Brother Big Sister national program and the local program has received a lot of assistance from the Triangle BBBS office.
“We will focus on youth ages 11 to 15 years old,” according to Chamber President Pat Marshall. “This is a critical time in the life of our young people and this is a time for us to reach them and make a difference in their life. Help them make the right choices by giving them encouragement and a positive role model. This is also a critical time for our community and we must move towards the community’s acceptance of partial responsibility for our problems.”
We feel with this program that more of the community can be involved in helping the youth more in depth by helping them set goals and attaining those goals. Also, hopefully with the community more involved, we as a collective body might change those young people that may go astray to become positive productive citizens in the community.”

Making a Difference One Child at a Time

The Dunn Chamber is leading an effort to recruit volunteers to tutor young children in the Dunn area schools.  Volunteers just need to give at least 30 minutes to one hour per week to help one student reach their potential.  According to Chairman Bo Jones, "This is not a "your" or "my" problem - it is an "our" problem as it affects the future vitality of our city and these young people."

According to Chamber President Pat Marshall, "Making a difference in education is as much about economic development as anything else - we as a Chamber and community will do."

Businesses are encouraged to support their employees in this volunteer program in helping close the gap between the economically disadvantaged household students in our schools.  According to Chamber Director Tammy Williams, "Tutoring is easy and very rewarding - it made my day to here the young lady I tutor call and inform me she passed the EOG."

Anyone interested in participating, should contact Bo Jones at 910-892-2184 or Tammy Williams at 910-892-4113.

Harnett Chambers Support Campbell University

All six Chambers of Commerce in Harnett County have passed a resolution in support of Campbell University and the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.

Campbell University is located in Buies Creek and is considered one of Harnett’s finest assets with a huge economic impact on the county. With discussion of moving the University’s Law School to Wake County, the county, cities and the chambers have felt it is imperative to communicate to the Board of Trustees the support Campbell University has from the various Harnett County communities.

“When we heard about the proposal to relocate the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law to Raleigh it caused a great concern,” according to Dunn Chamber President Pat Marshall. “I feel confident that I speak for everyone in Harnett County when I say we do not want to lose any part of this fine university.”

In the resolutions, each Chamber pledged their “continued support to the efforts of Campbell University in its growth and expansion for its pursuit of its mission in the education of students from around the world.”

The Resolutions were signed by Thomas Taylor, President of the Angier Chamber of Commerce; Pat Godwin and Jody Pollard, Presidents of the Coats Chamber; Pat Marshall, President of the Dunn Chamber; Norman Avery, President of the Erwin Chamber; Karen Kratz, President of the Lillington Chamber and Andrew Ruhland, President of the Western Harnett Chamber.

Dunn Farmers Market to Open in April

Ella Kelly, Chairman of the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce Downtown Development Committee announced today that the new Dunn Farmers Market will open in Dunn in April 2007.

A Farmers Market has been a discussion of the Downtown Development Committee for some time. After about a year of planning, the committee, in cooperation with the City of Dunn, is ready to start this project.

Committee members have researched Farmers' Markets in North Carolina and in other states to work on specifics of the market. Terry Moody of Creative TileWorks! has agreed to step up as the Manager of the Market.

According to Chairman Kelly, “We feel this market will help increase traffic in Downtown Dunn but will also be an asset to our entire community. We want it to be something people look forward to each Saturday.”

Members of the market should reside and produce the items they sell within a 50-mile radius of the City of Dunn. The market will not allow buying or reselling of produce or other products and crafts must be made by the person selling them or their immediate family. Baked goods and prepared foods are also allowed.

The market will be open April through October from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. each Saturday only. The market will be held in the City Parking Lot behind Sherry’s Bakery on US Hwy 301.

All local growers, producers and farmers interested in participating should contact the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce for Rules and Regulations and an Application for Membership. There are no weekly or monthly charges but an annual membership fee of $25.00 will apply to each member.

The Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce is located at 209 West Divine Street in Dunn. Applications are also available at the Broad Street Deli & Market in Downtown Dunn.

Chamber Officers and City Council Meet

The Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee and the Dunn City Council held a joint meeting on January 23. The meeting was hosted by the Chamber at the Brass Lantern Steak House.

Pat Marshall, President of the Chamber, recognized each Chamber officer to give the council an update on their division and the new objectives planned for the upcoming year. Renee Ellmers, Vice President of Community Development, reported that the bricks were being delivered the next day and the Dunn Entrance sign on Highway 421 should be completed soon.

The Chamber raised more than $10,000 to erect the sign in cash and in-kind contributions. The City provided the site, the manpower to prepare the site and completed the foundation. “This has been a joint project like so many of our other endeavors,” according to President Marshall. “The Chamber could not possibly do what it does without the support of the City.”

The Chamber also discussed with the council about its efforts this year, to reach out to the African-American business leaders. The Chamber plans to host a luncheon in February in recognition of National Black History Month. The Chamber wants to educate business leaders not currently members on what the chamber does and encourage involvement in the Chamber and its programs.

The City was praised for the way the City looks and the pride the City employees put into doing their jobs. The Council was also praised for the excellent job they have done for our City and the teamwork they display.

“We are a team,” according to Mayor Dal Snipes. “We may not agree on everything but this council has made it a priority to work together and display a team effort.”

The Mayor and each council member shared the challenges facing the City. The City will be holding its annual planning retreat in early February.

Ronnie Autry reported that Highway 421 will be closed for two weeks beginning on February 5. The street just in front of the Wayne Avenue Shopping Center will be the only area not passable by local citizens. All businesses will be accessible. The Chamber will try to help the City get the word out on this issue.

The council shared its interest in expanding the two annual clean ups sponsored by the Chamber to include residential areas. Enhancing the Government Channel was discussed and the Chamber was encouraged to get involved in the gang situation.

“This was a great meeting. It is wonderful to be in a City where the Chamber and City work so closely together to make our community better,” according to President Marshall.

Those in attendance from the City were Mayor Dal Snipes, Mayor Pro-tem Donnie Olds, Council members Buddy Maness, Bryan Galbreath, Billy Tart, and Joey Tart, City Manager Ronnie Autry and City Attorney Tilghman Pope. Councilman Billy Ray Godwin was unable to attend.

Chamber Representatives in attendance included President Pat Marshall, President Elect Barry Kelly, Vice Presidents Avery Corning (who coordinated the meeting), Helen Alspaugh, Renee Ellmers, John Snipes, Gary Vann, Immediate Past President Fran Whittenton and Executive Vice President Tammy Williams. Vice President Larry Byrd was unable to attend.
