The Governmental Affairs committee hosted a very successful State of the Dunn Area School on September 21st. About 40 people attended the event to hear Superintendent of Harnett County Schools Phil Ferrell speak about what he called some of the most “exciting and challenging times” Harnett schools have faced in the last 50 years.
Attendees heard about local school performance and educational needs. Very little growth has taken place in the Dunn area schools , but other areas of the county such as the Overhills area is bursting at the seams. Officials are expecting a 4,000 seat shortage by 2013.
Dunn area schools are doing a “phenomenal job in the face of some real challenges; for instance, Harnett Primary’s performance composite shot up 14.7 person this year when students were tested. The school met adequate yearly progress (AYP) in every subgroup this year, as did Dunn Middle. Dunn Middle also saw a 10 point increase in performance composite. One of the biggest challenges ahead states Mr. Ferrell is “figuring out how to continue to make sure our students are offered the best opportunity to compete in a global society.” Pictured Mr. Ferrell & Assistant Superintendent Nancy Holmes.
