The Washington Perspective
A delegation from the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce attended the Washington Perspective held in Washington DC on September 13-14. The event was hosted by Congressman Bob Etheridge and eight other Congressmen representing eastern North Carolina.
On Monday, the delegation heard information on the growing military presence in North Carolina due to BRAC. The presentation was presented by representatives of various military organizations including Greg Taylor of the BRAC Regional Task Force, Scott Dorney of the North Carolina Military Business Center and others. The delegation learned that only 1% of the Department of Defense spending is in North Carolina while North Carolina Ranks third in active military members. They also learned that Military is the number two industry in the state next to agriculture which is still number one.
The delegation then received a briefing from Congressman Etheridge and the other Congressmen representing the various districts on topics from Heath Care Reform to growing the economy and Trade Issues.
On Tuesday, the delegation attended a seminar featuring various speakers including General James T. Conway Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, Barbara B. Kennelly, President & CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, Rep. John Lewis, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Kevin Jennings, Assistant Deputy Secretary for Safe and Drug-Free Schools, General George W. Casey Jr., Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and Secretary Ray LaHood, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Both the Monday and Tuesday meetings were held in the Capitol Visitors Center.
