Mayor Gives State of the City at Chamber Luncheon
The Governmental Affairs Committee hosted a very successful State of the City luncheon on July 18. More than forty people attended the event to hear Mayor Oscar N. Harris report on the City's current situation. Mayor Harris stated that the Finance department received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The City is estimating they will put back $35,000 in the fund balance which is a plus considering they had unexpected expenses of $235,000 for costs and revenue shortfalls. The City received a Rural Development Community Facilities Loan to help finance the Downtown Dunn Revitalization project. Bids were received June 29 and awarded at the July 12 City Council Meeting.
Mayor Harris also spoke on the new building and development projects which have come to Dunn. These included but are not limited to the new McDonalds, OReilly Auto Parts, Walgreens and the new project to create affordable housing for seniors at the PAL site in the Old Historic Harnett High School Property.
Other topics included the adoption of the 2010 Tyler Park Master Plan and the 2010 Comprehensive System wide Parks and Recreation Plan which analyzed the needs of each of three parks owned by the City of Dunn. The City has re-applied for the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant which would provide $500,000 to upgrade the facilities at Tyler Park. The City has also entered into a new ten year water purchase contract with the Town of Benson, implemented a Memorandum of Understand with Harnett Health Systems and is continuing to work on pushing State DOT to improve the intersection of Ashe and Powell Ave. Thanks to Mayor Harris for sharing this report and to all those who attended and made this event a success!
