Vendors at the Dunn Farmers Market will host a Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest on Saturday, August 16 at 10:00 a.m.
There will be free watermelon slices given away to attendees and the participants of the contest will have a chance to win $25 cash. There will be a cash prize for children 12 and under and a $25 cash prize for the winner in the Everybody Else division. Dawn Moody of the Farmers Market encourages everyone to “start practicing and beat last year’s winners.” Last year, Pat Marshall won with his impressive 37-foot plus spit and Ryan Bagley won in the 12 and under division with 11 feet and 1 ½ inches.
The Dunn Farmers Market has been host to locally grown produce and handmade items throughout the summer months. They have had everything from strawberries to corn to peas to homemade doggy treats. According to Mrs. Moody, “we feel this is a great way to celebrate the coming end our summer harvest.” The market will remain open through October and feature late summer and fall produce.
If you have questions about the market, call the Dunn Chamber at 910-892-4113. The Market is open every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and is located behind Sherry’s Bakery on Clinton Avenue in Downtown Dunn.
